What's a zine?
Zines were originally black and white photocopied magazines, usually made as cheaply as possible with cut and paste layouts and handwritten or typed text. Since the arrival of home computers and printers, on-demand publishers and the like, I personally class all self-published magazines as zines. That covers everything from unique handmade zines to independently-produced glossy magazines, as well as digital PDF zines and self-published books. The key is that each zine is made primarily out of love, rather than profit and decisions on print run, content and format are made by individuals rather than advertisers or corporations.
Do I need a printer for the digital zines?
It depends - check the product description for details. Some will be set up for printing so you can make your own copy of the zine, in which case the pages will be out of order if viewed on a computer. Others will be laid out for reading on your computer and may not allow printing at all.
What program do I need to read them?
All digital zines sold on pushpin are PDFs, which can be viewed using Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview and many other programs and devices. It's likely your computer already has a PDF reader installed.
Can I print extra copies of the zine, or email them to my friends?
In the past, zinemakers often allowed others to re-photocopy and distribute their zines but this is becoming less common in the internet age. If a zinemaker is happy for you to copy their zine it will be stated clearly. Otherwise, you should respect their copyright and only print a copy for yourself. Similarly, PDF files should not be shared with others - it takes a lot of time and work to create a zine and the prices are low enough that anyone should be able to afford them. Having said that, with paper zines, if you're finished with your copy and no longer want it, please do regift it or leave it somewhere for a new reader to enjoy.
